Against Nonmonotonic Logic (DRAFT)

چکیده
The monotonicity property of inference in conventional formal systems of logic (S ` A and S ⊆ T implies T ` A) appears to prohibit certain crucial steps in practical intuitive reasoning. For example, reasoning by default (using assertions that are assumed to hold until explicitly contradicted) appears to be impossible in monotonic systems. Many crucial steps in practical reasoning certainly require nonmonotonic behaviors in inference procedures. But, I argue that it is highly misleading to describe these nonmonotonic behaviors in terms of nonmonotonic inference relations `. Rather, inference procedures should use metatheoretic operators, with conventionally monotonic inference relations, to support nonmonotonic behavior. 1 Defeasible Reasoning Requires Nonmono-

A Sequent Calculus for a Paraconsistent Nonmonotonic Logic ?
In spite of sequent calculus being an appealing tool for describing logical systems, its use along with nonmonotonic logics has been largely neglected. Reasons may be the hardness in implementing a context sensitive mechanism able to detect changes in the theory. This seems to brake the locality of context of sequent rules. Nevertheless, a nonmo-notonic sequent calculus may be helpful if result...
متن کاملAn S4F-related Monotonic Modal Logic
This paper introduces a novel monotonic modal logic, allowing us to capture the nonmonotonic variant of the modal logic S4F: we add a second new modal operator into the original language of S4F, and show that the resulting formalism is strong enough to characterise the logical consequence of (nonmonotonic) S4F, as well as its minimal model semantics. The latter underlies major forms of nonmonot...
متن کاملTowards First-Order Nonmonotonic Reasoning
We investigate the problem of reasoning in nonmonotonic extensions of rst-order logic. In particular, we study reasoning in rst-order MKNF, the modal logic of minimal knowledge and negation as failure introduced by Lifschitz. MKNF can be considered as a unifying framework for several nonmonotonic formalisms, including default logic, autoepistemic logic, circumscription, and logic programming. B...
متن کاملTwo-Valued Logic Programs
We define a nonmonotonic formalism that shares some features with three other systems of nonmonotonic reasoning—default logic, logic programming with strong negation, and nonmonotonic causal logic—and study its possibilities as a language for describing actions. 1998 ACM Subject Classification D.1.6 Logic Programming
متن کاملNonmonotonic Skeptical Consequence Relation in Constrained Default Logic
This paper presents a study of the nonmonotonic consequence relation which models the skeptical reasoning formalised by constrained default logic. The nonmonotonic skeptical consequence relation is defined using the sequent calculus axiomatic system. We study the formal properties desirable for a “good” nonmonotonic relation: supraclassicality, cut, cautious monotony, cumulativity, absorption, ...
